"Done is Better than Perfect"
Almost four years ago, amid the pandemic, after contemplating many unfinished projects, I got radically honest with myself and admitted that my perfectionism was another form of procrastination. Yes, I was procrastinating to get my website up, to launch new podcast episodes, to do my taxes etc. The list was endless and the guilt was heavy. But, once I started labelling perfectionism as procrastination, taking action became self-evident, and soon enough, getting things done was far better than perfecting them. And so, I challenged myself to share more of my "good enough" work with others and, perfect it along the way, it was liberating. I was no longer going to allow "perfect" to thwart advancement. I am still working on this but, there is progress. This first edition of The Big 3 follows the same principle: it is done and, I will perfect it along the way.
1 Book
Show Your Work! by Austin Kleon
In short, this book will give you 10 (new) ways to share your creativity and get discovered. It includes inspiring visuals, large fonts and catchy quotes, making it easy to read and digest. Here are some of my favourite takeaways in no particular order:
Share something small every day
Learn, teach, repeat
Become a documentarian of what you do
Process is messy
Begin again
1 Strategy
The Pomodoro® Technique
Heard of it? Know what it is?
It's a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo for improving productivity. It involves using a timer to break work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks. The Pomodoro Technique helps me manage my time more effectively because it minimizes distractions, and increases focus, making it ideal for achieving more things aligned with your defined goals. It's a superpower for creatives who like me, tend to have scattered minds.
Until the next one,
Be Consistent
